Low water landscapes for Pilbara workers. BHP Billiton employees in Newman are accommodated in two eco-villages, designed to be sustainable in the dry East Pilbara. Tim Davies Landscaping was asked to create a water-sensitive, low maintenance landscaping concept in harmony with the visual character and ecology of the site. The layout is based on “oases”, with nodes of lush planting and grassing only in defined zones such as communal barbecue areas. Beyond this, the local natural low water mulga vegetation has been rehabilitated using seed and small tube stock. An innovative irrigation system is based on scheme water hydra-zones, with around half the vegetation surviving without irrigation.
