Fast greening of an iron ore facility. A fixed budget, tight timing and harsh site conditions were the key challenges of a rehabilitation project completed by Tim Davies Landscaping for BHP Billiton at their iron ore bulk handling facility at Nelson Point and Finucane Island. Before TDL’s involvement, sporadic attempts to revegetate disused land on the 100ha site had met with limited success. TDL’s landscape professionals and North West workforce had the local knowledge and on-the-ground resources to develop a fast-track strategy and implementation plan. The solution included soil analysis and amelioration, liaison with earthworks contractors to manipulate the micro-climate and cost-effective remote site irrigation systems. The first stage utilised a temporary pioneer crop, permanent native seeding and tree stock in key locations and shelter belts. The result – successful “greening” of stage one within six months.
